Programme Aim

The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner in North Connaught College of Further Education, Tubbercurry, Sligo with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence to work independently or in a supervisory capacity in an administrative role in the private, public or voluntary sector.

There is also the opportunity to progress to higher education and training.

Programme Progression

Upon completion of this course at North Connaught College of Further Education, students will be able to apply for employment in business.  Job opportunities include:

  • Payroll administrators

Following on from the Advanced Administration Level 6 there is progression onto further education in both IT’s and Universities

Entry Requirements

  • Education: It is desirable that applicants have participated in primary and post primary education. It is an advantage if the applicant has completed a QQI Level 5 qualification or equivalent.
  • Aptitude: Applicants should be able to demonstrate some skills relevant to the course and be able to exercise initiative and independence when carrying out course activities.

Below is a more detailed description of each of the Components

Administration Practice

This will give the learner the knowledge, skills and a better understanding to be able to work independently in an administrative role.   They will be able to:  see what the relationship is between practices and policies, understand legislation in the workplace, for example data protection, corporate governance, security, confidentiality and Freedom of Information and more.  Students will also be able to organise meetings and events, travel arrangements and much more.

Supervisory Management

This component will allow the students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the role, duties and responsibility of a supervisory manager.  Learners will be able to facilitate a training session, write a job description, create rosters and budgets.  They will also develop the understanding of the theory underpinning supervision in a business settings.

Microsoft Excel (Advanced) 

This component will allow the learner to design, analyse, create various data formats and worksheet layout.  They will also create pivot tables, charts and graphics. In order to complete their own spreadsheet based on a business, students will gain a deeper understanding of how and when spreadsheets work.

 Payroll – Manual and Computerised

Learners will have a comprehensive knowledge of legislation in relation to working time and will be able to apply this knowledge to practical situations.  Students will be competent at processing the payroll for an organisation – they will complete the payroll function manually, or using Microsoft Excel, and using a commercial payroll package.  They will understand how the PAYE system operates and will be able to calculate the payroll under a variety of different scenarios.  They will know what information is submitted to and from the Revenue and will appreciate the effectiveness of the Revenue online services for employers and employees.

Microsoft Word (Advanced)

This will provide the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to use a word processing application to produce complex documents.  Learners will be able to:  use macros, converting files, tables, templates, importing objects, watermarks, styles, brochures, mail merge and other techniques.

Bookeeping – Manual and Computerised

Students will acquire the knowledge and skills required for Bookkeeping in both a manual and computerised setting, including writing up the books and ledgers, producing a trial balance, completing a VAT return and a bank reconciliation.  Learners will prepare year end journal entries and produce a set of final accounts in a computerised system.  They will identify and correct a range of errors in the accounts.  Final accounts will be analysed and conclusions drawn.

Team Leadership

This component is essential to understand the dynamics of the people working on your team. Throughout the component you will gain a knowledge and understanding of:

  • The stages of team development, for example, the different kinds of teams, a multi-team environment, the characteristics of an effective team and the need for different roles for individuals within the team.
  • Understand the different types of leadership and management styles.
  • Explore organisational strategy, objectives and goals.
  • Evaluate a range of current motivation theories and practical strategies to enhance motivation in teams.

Work Experience

Students will find work placement in a suitable office setting where they will apply their skills including demonstrating the ability to work in a supervisory capacity.  Work-experience classes will prepare the student to apply for this work placement, and future work, by focusing on interview preparation.  Students will assess their skills and qualities to produce a CV and cover letter.  They will investigate their employment sector and identify job openings and future training opportunities.  The placement reinforces the skills learned at North Connaught College and aids the development of employability/transferable skills.
