Staying Well in These Uneasy Times

As we all prepare to find our way through the days and months ahead, let us take a moment to make sure that, in this demanding and stressful time, we are taking care of ourselves, especially in relation to emotional, and physical wellbeing. To help the community of North Connaught College handle some of the current unease, we provide the following self‐care advice.

Continue to maintain:

  • Limiting contacts,
  • Social distancing,
  • Proper and regular hand washing,
  • Coughing and sneezing hygiene and
  • Wearing masks, gloves, and all appropriate personal protection equipment as needed.

Try to:

  • Eat a balanced diet – use up frozen, dried, and canned food to minimise shopping and the spread of COVID‐19.
  • Shop early or late – avoid crowded shopping situations where you increase the chances of contracting COVID‐19.
  • Take regular exercise – get out of the house each day; walk in uncrowded areas.
  • Get adequate sleep – maintain a regular sleep schedule and a technology free bedroom.
  • Engage with family and friends – regularly speak with friends and family.
  • Stay calm – make staying calm your highest priority. Try to make use of the well‐being breathing and simple exercises that we have posted on our website and advice from recent webinars.
  • Take personal time away from technology – try to lessen the time you spend on‐screen when not working.

Stress Relief Exercises – Pressure points

Stress can be relieved by applying gentle pressure to certain points on the body and the hands. You can do this yourself! Good for headaches too!

Practice mindfulness exercises 

No matter what is going on in the world mindfulness is a practice that is beneficial no matter what’s going on in the world. If things seem a little stressful at the moment, and you’re finding it hard to focus, it could be the ideal remedy. But what is mindfulness?

Put simply, being mindful is the act of being fully present and aware of where you are and what you’re doing. It’s something that all people can do, although few of us take the time to actually spend doing it. However, it can be a great first step when discovering how to stay healthy during lockdown.

Practising mindfulness can help to reduce stress and anxiety, improve your memory, and help with concentration. And maintaining a mindful life can benefit your emotional health, relationships and communication skills now and in the future.

1-minute exercise for wellbeing.

A great place to start with mindfulness is with some basic breathing exercises. Take one minute out of your day to sit and focus on your breath. Notice the air going in and out of your nostrils as your chest rises and falls. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to focus on your breathing.
